Lt.-Commr. (E.) JOHN THEODORE WINN, R.N., who was killed in action in January 1942, while serving in HMS Matabele, was born in 1910 and educated at Christ's Hospital, passing into the Royal Navy in 1928. After a year's general training he entered the Royal Naval Engineering College at Keyham and commenced a four years' engineering course, at the conclusion of which he served in HMS Iron Duke on a watch-keeping certificate course and in 1934 became engine room watchkeeper in HMS Shropshire.
After passing a two years' advanced course in engineering at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, he was promoted to be senior engineer, and served from 1936 to 1938 in HMS Danae. He was then appointed assistant inspector in the department of the engineer-in-chief at the Admiralty.
Lt.-Commr. Winn was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1938.
