JOHN SIMPSON ROPER, born on the 13th July, 1860, was educated at the Grammar School, Lancaster, and served his articles to Messrs. Harrison and Hale, Engineers and Surveyors, of that town.
Subsequently, for 2 years, he was employed as an assistant to the late Mr. James Mansergh, Past-President, on the Stockton and Darlington waterworks, St. Albans sewerage works and other undertakings.
From 1883 to 1888 he held the position of engineering assistant on the Earl of Bective's estate at Kirkby- Lonsdale, where he had charge of gas and water-supply, sewerage and drainage works, and the erection of buildings and embankments.
In 1859 he entered into partnership with Mr. Robert Lawson, and under the style of Lawson and Roper, subsequently Roper and Procter, carried on the business of Engineers and Surveyors in Lancaster.
Mr. Roper died on the 10th May, 1907, aged 47.
He was elected an Associate Member of The Institution on the 6th April 1586.
