"JOHN RAMSAY HANTON, who was born in 1877, served his apprenticeship with G. Anderson and Company, Ltd., Taymouth Engineering Works, Arbroath, from 1894 to 1899, and for the next two years was employed as an engine erector for Hawthorn Leslie and Company, Ltd., Newcastle upon Tyne. After acting for eleven years as maintenance engineer at the County Corporation's electric works he was appointed, in 1913, station superintendent to the Urban Electricity Supply Company, Hawick. Since 1919 he had held an appointment as resident engineer to Babcock and Wilcox, Ltd., in which capacity he was closely concerned with the erection and maintenance of large steam raising plants. Mr. Hanton, whose death occurred in February 1951, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1918. He was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers."
