1856 Letter. Signs as the Manager of the Britannia Iron Works and writes from Berg, Gladbach, Prussia
1856 Repeated from the Mining Journal. 'Manufacture of Steel — Puddling with Gas. Our correspondent, Mr. John Player, of the Britannia iron works, Rhenish Prussia, in another column, expresses his surprise that some of our capitalists in England do not turn their attention to puddling pig steel, which in Prussia is making rapid strides. An interesting experiment was made last week at Bonn, with turf coke, to drive a locomotive, result being about the same as coke from coal. Puddling both iron and steel with gas is very general in Prussia.......At a large rolling mill, which was erected by our correspondent for a company, it is now being arranged to puddle steel with gas from lignite, to be converted into railway wheels and tyres, for which there is an increasing demand. These will be forged under the hammer to nearly the required form, and passed through a pair of rolls, to finish them. He considers that we are not keep pace with the Germans in the manufacture of steel.'[1]
