"JOHN MACPHERSON DICK, whose death occurred as the result of an accident in Jersey on 3rd March 1950, at the age of seventy-one, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1923. He had spent nearly the whole of his engineering career in Ceylon, where he was chiefly concerned with boiler making and ship repairs. His apprenticeship was served with [[A. and J. Inglis|Messrs. A. and J. Inglis, Ltd]]., Glasgow, boilermakers, from 1893 to 1898, in whose employment he continued for a further five years before proceeding to Ceylon to take up an appointment as assistant in the Colombo Iron Works of [[Walker, Sons and Co|Messrs. Walker, Sons and Company, Ltd]]. In 1910 he was made superintendent of the boiler department and works manager of ship repairs, but two years later, after a brief engagement as engineer to [[J. H. Vavasseur and Co|Messrs. J. H. Vavasseur and Company]], he became a partner in the engineering firm of [[Hoare and Co|Messrs. Hoare and Company, Ltd]]., taking over the duties of works manager. "JOHN MACPHERSON DICK, whose death occurred as the result of an accident in Jersey on 3rd March 1950, at the age of seventy-one, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1923.
