John Henry Dewhurst (1854-1921) of John Dewhurst and Son


1921 Obituary [1]

JOHN HENRY DEWHURST was born in Manchester in 1854, and was educated at Sheffield.

He received his engineering training with Sharp, Stewart and Co., Ltd., Manchester, and with John Brown and Co., Ltd., Sheffield.

In 1886 he was appointed chief engineer at the [[Moss Bay Hematite Iron and Steel Co|Moss Bay Hematite Steel and Iron Co., Ltd.[[, Workington, which position he held until 1889, when he accepted a similar post at the Frodingham Iron and Steel Co., Ltd.

In 1891 he joined his father in partnership, the business - John Dewhurst and Son - being converted into a private limited company in 1902, when he was appointed chairman and managing director. He took out many patents for specialities for iron and steel works plant, and he developed the business so that larger works were installed at Tinsley, Sheffield.

His death took place suddenly, at his residence in Sheffield, on 22nd August 1921, at the age of sixty-six. Read his obituary in The Engineer 1921/09/02.

He became a Member of this Institution in 1895.
