JOHN HENDERSON ROBSON was chief lecturer in the mechanical engineering department of the L.C.C. School of Engineering at Poplar. He had had a long industrial and teaching experience in the north of England and in Spain before accepting this appointment in 1905.
He was born in 1864 and educated at Newcastle-on-Tyne and at South Kensington, where he took a special course for science teachers.
After serving an apprenticeship with Messrs. Robert Stephenson and Company from 1879 to 1885 he was leading draughtsman with many prominent engineering firms, including Messrs. Hawthorn Leslie, Messrs. Palmers of Jarrow, Messrs. Armstrong, Whitworth and Messrs. Scott and Company of Greenock. Whilst with the last-named he had charge of the design of engines for a number of British warships and a liner. He was also leading draughtsman for a time with Messrs. Rivas and Palmer of Bilbao.
During the greater part of this period he was an instructor at evening classes in Jarrow-on-Tyne, Sunderland and Newcastle, thus qualifying himself for the appointment which he held for so many years.
He became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1905 and his death occurred on 23rd December 1926.
