He was born at Walker-on-Tyne in 1839, and entered the offices of [[Bell Brothers]], at Newcastle, about forty years ago. When quite a young man he went to Middlesbrough as commercial manager of what was then a branch of the Newcastle firm in whose employ he was. | |||

JOHN GEORGE SWAN dropped dead in the grounds of his house, Upsall Hall, as he was on his way to church, on December 23, 1900.
He was born at Walker-on-Tyne in 1839, and entered the offices of Bell Brothers, at Newcastle, about forty years ago. When quite a young man he went to Middlesbrough as commercial manager of what was then a branch of the Newcastle firm in whose employ he was.
In 1864, in connection with some others, he established the Cargo Fleet Ironworks, of which he was manager, until the concern was converted into a limited liability company.
He was also interested in the Bearpark Coal and Coke Co., and was connected with the Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Formerly he was captain of the North Yorkshire Militia.
He was a member of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers, and an original member of the Iron and Steel Institute.
