c1795 Born at Shoreditch the son of Luke(?) Garton (1771-1839) and his wife Frances Harrison (1774-1870)
1831 August 4th. Married Mary A. Williams (1798-1861)
1837 Inquest in to the death of William Garton, age 60, who had been discharged from the iron foundry of Eyre Kingdom. His son is John Garton, a whitesmith of South Street, Exeter. Long and detailed report on the suicide.[1]
1838 Mention of John Garton, of North street, Smith.[2]

Garton (age 53 born Exeter) and their two children; Elizabeth Garton (age 25 born Exeter); and William Garton (age 13 born Exeter). One servant.[8]

1861 Living at 190 High Street, Exeter: John Garton (age 66 born Shoreditch), Ironmonger and Manufacturer employing 87 men in all its branches; Widower. With his son John J. Garton (age 37 born Exeter), engaged in the firm. Also his daughter-in-law Elizabeth Garton (age 30 born Dawlish) and his two grand-daughters Maria E. Garton (age 8 born Exeter) and Ellen F. Garton (age 6 born Exeter). One servant.[10]
1862 Marriage of John Garton (son?) to Sarah Vaughan.[11]
1867 March 21st. Died at Eyton House, Barnfield, Exeter, age 69.[12] Will proven by John Josiah Garton, ironfounder the son and Henry Reed Bennett of St. Thomas.
