JOHN EDGAR WILLIAMS, M.B.E., had seen twenty-four years' service in the Sudan. He joined the Sudan Government as engineer in the public works department in 1906 and in a few years became chief engineer in charge of the electricity and water supplies of Khartoum. In 1925 he was appointed manager of the Sudan Light and Power Company, a position which he held at the time of his death on 9th August 1930.
Mr. Williams was born in London in 1880 and was apprenticed at the works of Messrs. Easton, Anderson and Goolden. He also attended Woolwich Polytechnic. He remained with the firm for two years and was engineer on the erection of the electric lifts on the City and South London Railway extension in 1899 to 1900.
After similar experience with another firm and with the Otis Elevator Company he was appointed engineer-in-charge for Messrs. Cromptons at Tooting Bec Asylum.
In 1903 he went to Egypt as chief electrical engineer for Messrs. Thos. Cook and Company and general manager of Helouan Electric Supply.
In 1906 he joined the service of the Sudan Government.
Mr. Williams became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1909 and a Member in 1924 and he was also a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
