John Dickson was contractor for the Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway[1]

1871 Carried out the majority of the construction for the Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway from 1871 to 1873.

1873 Attended the general meeting of the Whitby railway; explained about shortage of labour and of materials

1873 Due to a lack of funds and problems with the contractor, work was suspended on the railway until the North Eastern Railway took up the lease in 1875.
