JOHN CRAWFORD WALLACE was born at Ardrossan, Ayrshire, on 17th July 1865, and served his apprenticeship at the Fairfield Engineering and Shipbuilding Works, Govan, Glasgow.
He then went to India as engineer on a tea plantation in Assam, and four years later returned to join his father's firm of engineers in Glasgow as manager, becoming a partner in 1890.
In 1894 he was appointed superintendent engineer at the new thread mills of [pJ. and P. Coats|Messrs. J. and P. Coats]], near Barcelona, which post he held until 1901, when he took up a similar position with the Mazawattee Tea Co., New Cross.
