"Lt. Colonel JOHN BELLENDEN ALFORD, R.A.S.C., was educated at Rugby School and the Regent Street Polytechnic, London. On the completion, in 1927, of four years' practical training in the shops and drawing office of Messrs. Alford and Alder, Ltd., engineers, London, he joined Messrs. Clayton Wagons, Ltd., of Lincoln, where for two years he was in charge of design and the drawing office.
He then returned to Messrs. Alford and Alder to take up the appointment of managing director, and as such was responsible for a fleet of commercial vehicles and the repair shops. On the outbreak of the 1939-45 war he was granted a commission in the R.A.S.C. and eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Lieut.-Col. Alford, whose death occurred on 18th November 1947, at the age of forty-one, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1936."
