"JOHN ALFRED SMEETON, whose death occurred in his seventieth year on 24th June 1945, was the founder and for nearly thirty years managing director of Messrs. John A. Smeeton, Ltd., rolling mill engineers, London. His apprenticeship was served with Messrs. Crossley Brothers and Messrs. Beyer, Peacock and Company, Ltd., of Manchester. After twelve months' experience in the works of Messrs. Vickers, Ltd., at Barrow-in-Furness, he went to sea and served as marine engineer with the Peninsula and Oriental Steam Shipping Co for three years. He then joined the Klein Engineering Co, for whom he was engaged on condensing plant.
Subsequently he was London manager for Messrs. Richardsons, Westgarth and Company, Ltd., for three years, and for a similar period held the appointment of managing director of Fusion Welded Metals, Ltd. Later, he was associated with the British Perlit Iron Co, and acted as agent for various works on the Continent producing steel castings and forgings. Mr. Smeeton was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1901, and was transferred to Membership in 1918."
