1908 Born the son of James Colquhoun Macfarlane
1911 Living at Waipori, Southborough Road, Chelmsford: James C. Macfarlane (age 34 born Glasgow), Electrical Engineer. With his wife Mabel A. Macfarlane (age 32 born Creeting St Mary, Suffolk) and their two sons James W. Macfarlane (age 2.5 born Chelmsford) and William W. Macfarlane (age 5 months born Chelmsford). Also his SIL Blanche L. Wright (age 26 born Creeting St Mary, Suffolk).[1]
1934 'The first Whitworth senior scholarship in engineering to come to Glasgow in five years has just been won by Mr J. W. Macfarlane, eldest son of the managing director of the Macfarlane Engineering Co. (Ltd.), Cathcart, Glasgow. In 1931 Mr Macfarlane was awarded an ordinary Whitworth scholarship. Two of the senior scholarships are awarded each year: they are valued at £250, and are tenable for two years. They are open to competition by engineering students throughout the British Empire. Mr Macfarlane is well-known in West of Scotland motor cycling circles, and is president of the Bear's Head Motor Cycling Club'[2]
