James Pugh Kirkwood (1807-1877), American Civil Engineer
Born in Edinburgh on 27 March. Apprenticed to Thomas Grainger (later Grainger and Miller), surveyor, and worked there as an assistant from 1821-32.
In 1832 he decided to emigrate to the USA. Worked with William McNeill. He went on to have a long and varied career in railway construction and water supply. He served as Director of the American Society of Civil Engineers from 1853-66 and then as the Society's second President from 1867-68 (following his fellow Scot and first ASCE President - James Laurie). He died in Brooklyn on 22 April 1877.
