JAMES PORTER MAGINNIS was born in Belfast on 24th March 1850.
He served his apprenticeship at the Worcester Engine Works, and was subsequently in the employ of Mr. E. B. Marten until he came as chief draughtsman to this Institution in 1876, in whose service he remained until 1885, when he started on his own account in Carteret Street, Westminster.
He brought out several small inventions and made many engineering, architectural and contour models for Parliamentary Committees and other bodies. During this period he acted for some years as English representative of the South Western Railway of Russia, and was one of the Auditors of the Benevolent Fund of this Institution from its inception in 1913.
His death took place at Streatham Hill, London, on 14th April 1922, at the age of seventy-two.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1879.
1922 Mr Charles J. James carried on the drawing-office and printing business of Mr. Maginnis at 11, Cateret-street, Queen Anne's Gate London.[2]
