1937 Obituary [1]

Lieutenant JAMES PENMAN OGILVIE, R.A.O.C., whose death occurred on 16th April 1937, at the early age of 32, was born at Burntisland, Fifeshire; in 1921 he entered the works of Messrs. Henry Balfour and Company, Ltd., engineers and iron founders, Fifeshire, where he served his apprenticeship.

He subsequently studied engineering at the University of Glasgow, graduating with honours in 1926. During the next three years he was in Venezuela, first as constructional engineer to Messrs. Venezuelan Oil Concessions, Ltd., and later as assistant resident engineer on Mere Grande, the largest oilfield in the country. He was appointed assistant divisional engineer to Messrs. Shell-Mex, Ltd., in 1929, but he later joined the R.A.O.C., and was granted a commission in 1931.

He afterwards went to Egypt and was for a time officer in charge of mechanical transport inspection, and subsequently officer in charge of a workshop dealing with repairs to tanks and other fighting vehicles. Shortly before his death he was selected for employment at the Mechanization Experimental Establishment, Farnborough. Lieutenant Ogilvie was elected a Student of the Institution in 1924, and was transferred to Graduateship in 1931 and to Associate Membership in 1934.
