James Dwyer McGee (1903-1987)
1903 Born in Canberra, Australia.
1926 Graduated at University of Sydney with a first class degree in physics and mathematics.
Completed a Masters on electron motion in gases.
Won a scholarship to the Cavendish Laboratory (Cambridge), where he was a student of James Chadwick.
1932 Moved to the new group set up at the EMI Research Laboratories to work on television (although he had intended to follow an academic career).
With W. F. Tedham developed the Emitron television camera tube, then the Super-Emitron and the CPS-Emitron.
WWII He worked on infra-red imaging for night vision.
Post-WWII Returned to EMI to work on television cameras.
1954 Appointed Professor of Instrument Technology at Imperial College
Continued to work on photo-electronics.
c.1971 Retired from the chair of Applied Physics
1980 Returned to Australia
1987 Died in New Zealand
