"JAMES Louis HURST was educated at the Manchester Municipal College of Technology and served a probationary College apprenticeship with the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company, Ltd., in the same city during 1935 and 1936. He found his first employment with F. M. Aspin and Company, Ltd., Bury, automobile engineers, in 1940, as a draughtsman and he remained there until 1943, apart from a few months' service in the Pioneer Corps, being engaged latterly as an assistant metallurgist. He then returned to the Metropolitan-Vickers Company to take up the appointment of junior engineer in the gas-turbine department, and was promoted to the post of gas-turbine engineer in 1946. His final position, which he held from 1947, was that of research engineer to C. A. Parsons and Company, Ltd., Heaton Works, Newcastle upon Tyne. Mr. Hurst, whose brief but promising career was terminated by his death after a short illness on 14th August 1951 at the early age of thirty-three, was elected a Student of the Institution in 1942 and transferred to Associateship five years later."
