JAMES BOYD SHIELD, whose death in his sixty-seventh year occurred on 22nd August 1943, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1914 and was transferred to Membership in 1933. He was also a Member of the [[Institution of Electrical Engineers]].
After serving his apprenticeship from 1891 to 1896 with [[Alexander Shanks and Son|Messrs. A. Shanks and Sons, Ltd.]], general engineers, Arbroath, he remained with that firm for a few months as draughtsman. He then occupied similar positions with [[John Cochrane|Mr. John Cochrane]], of Barrhead, and [[Mavor and Coulson|Messrs. Mavor and Coulson, Ltd.]], electrical engineers, of Glasgow, until 1900 when he was promoted to be chief draughtsman to the latter firm.
Four years later he was made works manager to [[Anderson, Boyes and Co|Messrs. Anderson, Boyes and Company, Ltd.]], of Motherwell, with whom he retained an association lasting for nearly forty years. His responsibilities as works manager included the supervision of designs and the manufacture of all kinds of mining, coal-cutting, and conveying machinery. In 1914 he became works director and for the next four years was closely concerned with the production of munitions of war. His appointment as joint managing director dated from 1928.


Mr. Shield retired from active administration some years before his death, but retained his seat on the board.

JAMES BOYD SHIELD, whose death in his sixty-seventh year occurred on 22nd August 1943, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1914 and was transferred to Membership in 1933. He was also a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.

After serving his apprenticeship from 1891 to 1896 with Messrs. A. Shanks and Sons, Ltd., general engineers, Arbroath, he remained with that firm for a few months as draughtsman.
