James Allan (1807-1880), of the Allan Line
1807 Born in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, son of Alexander Allan and his wife Jean nee Crawford.
1830 After the launch of a new ship built for his father, James succeeded him in the command of the "Favorite".
1837 Robert Steel and Co built the barque "Arabian" for the Allans. James took command of her. The first voyage of the "Arabian" was made from Greenock to Canada and on her return to the Clyde she went to Glasgow, taking advantage of the increased river depth from dredging.
1841 Married Eleanora Blair Gilkison in Port Glasgow[1]
James was joined by his brother, Alexander, the youngest of the family, in the management of the Glasgow business.
1851 James Allan 43, General Merchant & Ship Owner, lived in Barony with Eleanora Allan 29, Alexander Allan 8, Robert G Allan 7, Eleanora B Allan 4, Jane C Allan 3, James H Allan 1[2]
1870 James Allan and others purchased land and placed it at the disposal of the Clyde Navigation Trust at cost price, this land later being used for the Cessnock Docks[3]
1871 James Allan 63, shipowner, lived in Glasgow Barony with Jas H Allan 21, Mary G Allan 19, Richard G. Allan 13, Boyce Allan 12[4]
1880 Died in Skelmerlie, near Glasgow
