J. Such and Sons of King Street Works, Cheltenham.
1886 S. J. Such joined his son John's business in North Place, Cheltenham. He had previously been foreman at Messrs R. E. and C. Marshall. [1]
1889 J. Such of the Machine Works, North Place, Cheltenham, offered for sale a (second-hand?) half horsepower Barker's Universal gas engine. [2]
1892 Reference found to "Such and Larter, engineers, King Street Works, Cheltenham" [3] which is presumably related to J. Such & Sons in some way.
At some point the business transferred to Swindon Road, Cheltenham. [4]
1900 At King Street Works, Cheltenham [5]
Jan 1909 The firm of J. Such & Sons Ltd was founded with a capital of £6,000 in £1 shares (2,500 6%, non-cumulative preference), to acquire the business of founders, engineers, manufacturers of agricultural machinery and other implements. The subscribers were S. J. Such, S. G. Such, J. L. Such, H. E. Such, S. Such, C. Such and O. Such and the first directors were S. J. Such, S. G. Such and J. L. Such. [6]
1914 J. Such & Sons Ltd won the contract for the provision of iron fire escape stairs at Cheltenham Municipal Offices [7].
It is perhaps worth noting that the Such family were stalwarts of the local fire brigade.
WW1 Production of shells at King Street Works [8]
1918 J. Such & Sons Ltd had a contract to make "tank pins" for the Ministry of Munitions. These were probably track pins, used to connect the links on one shoe in a tank's track to the next.
1921 Advert describing the firm as patentees and manufacturers of lifts for hotels and the like. [9]. Another from the same source described them as consulting and mechanical engineers carrying out oxy-acetylene welding and cutting of metals. These give the date of establishment as 1885, not as above.
1927 Death of Samuel John Such, head of J. Such & Sons. His sons were John, Sam and Sid Such. The coffin was borne by employees of the firm, Messrs Ballinger, Cook, Hall, Comely, C. Oakley and P. Oakley. Other employees (named) were also in attendance. The report of the funeral appears in the Cheltenham Chronicle for 27 August 1927, p.9.
1933 Death of Sam Such, Managing Director (see above for source, which has a photo of the deceased). Succeeded by Chas Such.
Feb 1934 Advert titling the firm "Such and Sons Ltd", central heating and domestic water engineers, water supplies, acetylene and electric welding repairs, lift manufacture etc [10]
March 1934 Advert describing the firm as motor mower specialists [11] Still at King Street Works.
WWII Manufactured parts for the De Havilland Mosquito [12]
