Mr J. Shackleton, O.B.E., M.Sc. (Member), died suddenly on 13th July at the age of 59.
Mr Shackleton served an apprenticeship with H.M. Dockyard, Chatham, and obtained a first class honours degree from the University of London.
After spending ten years in industry, he joined the Government Service in 1938 as a Scientific Officer in the Armament Research Department of the Ministry of Supply, where he worked throughout the 1939-45 war.
In 1948 he transferred to Fort Halstead to work on high explosives and, in 1951, he was appointed to the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment. At the time of his death Mr Shackleton was the Senior Superintendent of Weapon Design at that Establishment.
Mr Shackleton joined the Institution as an Associate Member in 1948 and became a Member in 1955. He gave considerable help to the Membership committee and worked actively for the Southern Branch. His valuable advice and generous personality will be greatly missed by his many friends and colleagues.
