James Likeman (c1857-1938) sometime salesman for the British Motor Co[1]
c1857 Born in Brighton the son of John Likeman, a Market Gardner and Lime-burner, and his wife Eliza
c.1873 When Harry Lawson moved with his parents to Brighton he went to work for James Likeman and they remained close for many years.
1876 Patent. '2649. And James Likeman and Henry John Lawson, both of Brighton, in the county of Sussex, have given the like notice in respect of the invention of "improvements in the construction of bicycles.'[2]
1876 Haynes and Jefferis made a few 'low' bicycles to the patented design of Lawson and Likeman[3].
1878 Partnership dissolved. '...Henry John Lawson and James Likeman, trading under the style or firm of Lawson and Likeman, at Brighton, in the county of Sussex, Patentees and Manufacturers of the Safety Bicycle, was dissolved, by mutual consent...'[4]
1893/95 Trustee of the Hounslow Brewery Co at its winding up [5] [6]
1901 Living at 50 Effingham Road, Hornsey, Mddx: James Likeman (age 43 born Brighton), Secretary to Financial Co. With his wife Esther Likeman (age 41 born Camden Town) and their three children; Alexander D. Likeman (age 15 born Sussex); Winifred V. Likeman (age 9 born London); and Cecil J. Likeman (age 1 born Hornsey).[7]
1904 In the court case against E. T. Hooley and Harry Lawson, Likeman says he has known Lawson for thirty years. He gives his address as Renstead Road, Sutton and details much about his business dealings with Lawson. [8]
