1878 'The death of Mr. J. C. Batchelor, the well-known Traffic Manager of the East Indian Railway, is announced. Mr. Batchelor had been ailing little lately, but (says the Indian Daily News) it was not supposed that he was suffering from any serious illness, and he was having tiffin at Messrs. Burn and Co.’s, when suddenly, in the middle of a sentence, he fell back in his chair, and died of heart disease, it is supposed. He was a man universally liked on the Railway, and a man of most charitable disposition. Of his management of the line, it would be work of supererogation to say anything. Its excellence has been acknowledged over and over again by the Directors of the E.1.R., and he has been specially thanked for his services by successive Governments of India.'[2]
