Craighouse, Isle of Jura

1810 The first distillery was established on the Hebridean island of Jura by the island's owner, Archibald Campbell. In contrast to its near neighbour, Islay, the small population and remote location did not encourage expansion

1901 A succession of owners, the last of which was James Ferguson and Sons, operated the distillery until unfavourable market conditions brought about its closure

1959 With financial backing from the Leith whisky blender Charles Mackinlay and Company Limited, the Isle of Jura Distillery Company Limited was incorporated in order to re-establish distilling on the island

1963 By the time that the distillery was up and running Scottish and Newcastle Breweries has acquired both Mackinlays and the Jura distillery

1974 Jura whisky appears as a single malt for the first time

1985 Invergordon Distillers bought both Mackinlays and the Jura distillery

1993 Whyte and Mackay Limited took over Invergordon Distillers
