Imperial Direct West India Mail Service Co

1901 The company was registered on 9 December to take over a fleet of steamers trading between Great Britain and the West Indies. [1]
1901 the British Government awarded an additional mail contract from Bristol to the West Indies to the Imperial Direct Line.
The company acquired 7 steam ships for the service with the West Indies: SS Port Royal, SS Port Antonio, SS Port Maria, SS Port Morant, SS Montrose, SS Garth Castle, SS Delta.
Contracts were arranged with Elder, Dempster and Co to ship bananas regularly from the West Indies. The freight rates were agreed between Elder, Dempster and Co and Fyffe, Hudson and Co on behalf of a company yet to be formed called Elders and Fyffes.[2]
