IAN NORMAN MURRAY was associated with the electrical side of mechanical engineering throughout his career. He was born in 1900 and received his education at Glasgow University, where he graduated B.Sc., in engineering. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Barr and Stroud, Ltd., he held a short appointment as junior engineer in the tramways department of Glasgow Corporation. Subsequently he was appointed assistant to the chief engineer at the generating station of the Ealing Borough Council, a position which he held until 1927.
In that year he went to China to take up an appointment as distribution engineer to the China Light and Power Company, Ltd., of Hong Kong, with which company he was associated until the untimely close of his professional career. Since 1933 he had acted as deputy manager with responsibility to the manager for the control of a large staff.
Mr. Murray, who died of wounds received in the assault on Hong Kong in December 1941, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1935, and had served for several years on the Committee of the China Branch. He was also a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
