1770 Born in Stirlingshire, son of Nicol Baird; his elder brother Charles became an engineer.
1796 Surveyed the prospective sites for 2 reservoirs for the Forth and Clyde Canal.
1807 Succeed his father as superintendent of the Forth and Clyde Canal; birth of his son Nicol Hugh Baird
1813-6 With Francis Benjamin Hall surveyed the route between Edinburgh and Glasgow for the Union Canal
1818 Responsible for the construction of the Union Canal between Falkirk and Edinburgh, including the Slateford Aqueduct, Edinburgh
1827 Died at Kelvinside
