HOUSTON STEWART STEWART, born on the 5th June, 1850, received a public-school education, and after an interval spent with T. and J. Brocklebank, shipowners, of Liverpool, joined the Darlaston Bridge and Roofing Co, having purchased an interest in the business. As a director of the Company, between 1873 and 1876, he took an active part in the construction and erection of many important engineering works.
In 1876 he came to Westminster, where he practised as a consulting engineer until his death. For many years he was responsible for the English engineering work of the Government of Mysore, and superintended the extension of the railways of that State, from Bangalore to Hindupur, and to the Kolar gold-fields. He also acted for a time as the Engineer in this country for the Pachuca and Tampico Railway, Mexico, and was consulted upon various other important works.
He died in London on the 4th May, 1904, in his fifty-fourth year. Able as an engineer, and of scrupulous rectitude, Mr. Stewart was much respected in business; while in social circles his personal qualities made him very popular.
He was elected an Associate of the Institution on the 7th December, 1875, and was transferred to the class of Members on the 21st February, 1893.
