Mr. Herbert Werner Kolle died at Tulse Hill, London, on February 16, 1943, at the age of 80.
As a young man, Mr. Kolle served at the works of Messrs. Ferranti, Thompson, and Ince, Ltd., erecting plant for them both at home and abroad.
From 1885 to 1888 he was Manager of the Eastbourne Electric Light Company, and from 1888 to 1895 he was personal assistant to Dr. S. Z. de Ferranti, the famous electrical engineer. During this period Mr. Kolle was connected with a number of important electrical projects; among other things he was responsible for the manufacture and laying of the 10,000-volt cable on the South-Eastern Railway between Deptford and London.
In 1892 he made an extensive water-power survey at Laufenburg on the Rhine for the development of 30,000 h.p.
When the Ferranti works was removed to Hollingwood, Lanes., in 1895, Mr. Kolle became London Office Manager of Messrs. Babcock and Wilcox, Ltd., a position which he held until his retirement in 1919. He was made a director of the firm in 1927.
Mr. Kolle had been a member of the Institute of Metals since 1914.
