HERBERT BROWN was born at North Ormsby, Yorkshire, on 20th April 1880, and was educated at the High School, Stockton-on-Tees.
His apprenticeship of six years was served in the works of Worth, Mackenzie and Co., Ltd., Stockton-on-Tees, and in 1901 he entered the drawing office of Messrs. Head, Wrightson and Co., of the same town.
In April 1904 he went to India as assistant engineer with Jessop and Co., Ltd., Calcutta, where he was engaged on designing and superintending the construction of bridges, roofs, hydraulic machinery, etc.
Owing to ill health he returned to England in 1906, and during the next three years he was employed on the Admiralty Harbour Works, Dover, as resident engineer to supervise the erection of the iron lighthouse and other work.
In October 1910 he was appointed superintendent engineer at the smelting works of the Cape Copper Co., near Swansea, which position he held until 1918, when he suffered a breakdown in health.
In November of the following year he went to South Africa, and was engaged as draughtsman at the De Beers Mines, Kimberley. Owing to the Company's retrenchments, he took up temporary work with the Portland Pretoria Cement Co., at Mafeking, where his death took place on 7th June 1921, at the age of forty-one.
