HERBERT ALFRED JOHNSON died suddenly from heart failure on July 7, 1923.
Born in 1866, he was the son of the late Mr. J. T. Johnson, J.P., of Manchester and Alderwasley. He was chairman of Richard Johnson and Nephew, Ltd., of Bradford and Ambergate, near Derby, wire manufacturers.
He was deeply interested in military matters, and from 1905 to 1913 was in command of the 4th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment. During the war he proceeded to France in command of a battalion of the same regiment, and was severely wounded during the battle of the Somme. He also took great interest in agriculture.
He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1890.
