HENRY SHIMMIN was for more than twenty years resident mechanical engineer to the Globe and Phoenix Gold Mining Company, at Que Que, Southern Rhodesia.
He was born at Port St. Mary, Isle of Man, in 1865 and served his apprenticeship from 1881 to 1886 with Messrs. Napier Brothers, Ltd., Glasgow. In 1887 he was appointed machine shop foreman and held this position for eleven years.
He then went into business on his own account in Glasgow as a motor car and cycle engineer, but relinquished this in 1903, when he was appointed mechanical engineer to the Inez Gold Mining Company, Rhodesia.
Two years later he joined the Globe and Phoenix Company as assistant mechanical engineer, being promoted to resident mechanical engineer in 1910. He was responsible for the installation of extensive new plant, including boilers, compressors, and dynamos, together with the associated winding gears, underground hoists, and pumping equipment. In addition, he acted as consulting engineer to Gwelo municipality, Southern Rhodesia.
In 1920 he was elected a Member of the Institution.
His death occurred at Port Erin, Isle of Man, on 10th September 1934.
