Henry Shield (1838-1916) chairmen of Fawcett, Preston and Co and director of Liverpool Nitrate Co

1841 Living in Stotes Hall, Byker, Nth.: John Shield (age c40), Merchant. With Catharine Shield (age c30); John Shield (age c13); Hugh Shield (age c10); Isabella Shield (age c7); Clifton Shield (age c5); Henry Shield (age c3); and William Shield (age c2). Four servants.[1]

1894 Re-elected as a Director of the Colorado Nitrate Co.[2]

1901 Living at 3 Huskisson Street, Liverpool: Henry Shield (age 63 born Newcastle-upon-Tyne), Mechanical Engineer - Employer. Single. Three servants.[3]

1916 December 16th. Died age 78 at his residence 3 Huskisson Street.[4]

HENRY SHIELD, son of Mr. John Shield, Stotes Hall, Northumberland, was born on the 7th March, 1838, and was educated at the Ecole Centrale, Paris.

He served his apprenticeship wills Messrs. Robert Stephenson & Sons, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and at the age of 26, was appointed manager of Messrs. Simpson & Co., Pimlico, the eminent Waterworks Engineers.

On 23rd December, 1872, he became a partner in the firm of Messrs. Fawcett, Preston & Co., Engineers, Liverpool, and when this firm was formed into a limited Company he became chairman, and remained a director until his death on 16th December, 1916. Mr. Shield was a Director of the Liverpool Nitrate Co., Ltd., Colorado Nitrate Co., Ltd., and the Iron Trades Employers' Insurance Association, Ltd., and was on the Executive of the Engineers Employers' Federation.

He was also a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He was elected a Member of the Liverpool Engineering Society on the 13th December, 1899.
