HENRY PERCY HOLT was born in Wakefield on 14th August 1848.
He began his engineering career in 1865 as a pupil of his father, [[Henry Holt|Mr. Henry Holt]], civil engineer, of Leeds and Wakefield, under whom he obtained experience in colliery branch railways, drainage and waterworks.
During 1868 he was an improver at the [[Yorkshire Engine Co|Yorkshire Engine Co.'s]] works, Sheffield, under [[Alfred Louis Sacre|Mr. A. L. Sacre]], in charge of the erection and repairs of locomotive engines; and between 1869 and 1871 he was employed by that Company to superintend the running of new engines on the [[Great Northern Railway]] at Doncaster, and on the [[Midland Railway]] at Derby; and subsequently on the installation of engines of the [[Tanstoff-Kosloff Raiway]], and the Lemberg-Czernowitz Railway, and on the shipment of engines for the [[Poti-Tiflio Railway]].
In April 1871 he took his father's place and share in the firm of [[Holt and Childe]], civil and mining engineers, of Wakefield, and was engaged on various works until the following July, when the partnership was dissolved and he commenced business as a civil and consulting engineer in Leeds, his practice consisting in the design and superintendence of the construction of fireproof mills, warehouses, hydraulic hoists, and packing machinery; works for the drainage and purification of waste waters; well-sinking and shaft-driving reservoirs; mechanical cooling, beating and ventilating of large buildings; and the erection of large concrete buildings, iron roofs, girders, &c.
Since 1872 he also practised in London, and carried out the following, amongst other works:— Queen's Parade Tramway, Scarborough; Drill Shed Roof, Finsbury, for the Honourable Artillery Company; combined iron and timber roof, truss construction, made by Messrs. A. Handyside and Co. from his design for Messrs. J. Fowler and Co., of Leeds; the Electric Construction Corporation, Wolverhampton; and the Royal Engineers' and Home Office Departments.
In 1881 he joined the firm of [[Crossley Brothers|Messrs. Crossley Brothers and Co.]], and designed and superintended the erection of the Otto Gas-Engine Works at Openshaw, becoming subsequently a Director and Consulting Engineer of Messrs. Crossley Brothers, Manchester.
His death took place at his residence in Kensington Court, Loudon, on 15th July 1903, in his fifty-fifth year.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1873.

HENRY PERCY HOLT was born in Wakefield on 14th August 1848.

He began his engineering career in 1865 as a pupil of his father, Mr. Henry Holt, civil engineer, of Leeds and Wakefield, under whom he obtained experience in colliery branch railways, drainage and waterworks.

During 1868 he was an improver at the Yorkshire Engine Co.'s works, Sheffield, under Mr. A. L. In 1881 he joined the firm of Messrs. Crossley Bros., Ltd, and designed and superintended the erection of a portion of the Otto Gas-Engine Works at Openshaw, becoming subsequently a Director and Consulting Engineer of Messrs. Crossley Bros., Ltd., Manchester. He resigned his directorship and connection with the firm some considerable time before his death, which took place at his residence, 15 Kensington Court, London, on the 15th July, 1903.

Mr. Holt was elected an Associate of the Institution on the 2nd February, 1875, was subsequently placed among the Associate Members, and was transferred to the class of Members on the 6th April, 1898.
