HENRY PERCY HOLT was born in Wakefield on 14th August 1848. | |||

HENRY PERCY HOLT was born in Wakefield on 14th August 1848.
He began his engineering career in 1865 as a pupil of his father, Mr. Henry Holt, civil engineer, of Leeds and Wakefield, under whom he obtained experience in colliery branch railways, drainage and waterworks.
During 1868 he was an improver at the Yorkshire Engine Co.'s works, Sheffield, under Mr. A. L. Sacre, in charge of the erection and repairs of locomotive engines; and between 1869 and 1871 he was employed by that Company to superintend the running of new engines on the Great Northern Railway at Doncaster, and on the Midland Railway at Derby; and subsequently on the installation of engines of the Tanstoff-Kosloff Raiway, and the Lemberg-Czernowitz Railway, and on the shipment of engines for the Poti-Tiflio Railway.

In 1881 he joined the firm of Messrs. Crossley Bros., Ltd, and designed and superintended the erection of a portion of the Otto Gas-Engine Works at Openshaw, becoming subsequently a Director and Consulting Engineer of Messrs. Crossley Bros., Ltd., Manchester. He resigned his directorship and connection with the firm some considerable time before his death, which took place at his residence, 15 Kensington Court, London, on the 15th July, 1903.
Mr. Holt was elected an Associate of the Institution on the 2nd February, 1875, was subsequently placed among the Associate Members, and was transferred to the class of Members on the 6th April, 1898.
