HENRY JOHN SUTHERLAND MACKAY joined the staff of the Stirling Boiler Company in 1902 and became successively London manager, general manager and managing director. During his long connexion with the firm, Mr. Mackay was associated with many large power station installations, and he introduced Stirling water-tube boilers into the mercantile service during the War period for cargo vessels. His name was associated also with many patents relating to strain-plant and its accessories.
He was born at Peebles on 19th April 1872 and after spending some time at Glasgow University entered into an apprenticeship in 1889 with Alexander Chaplin and Company, of Govan.
After further drawing office and works experience with Messrs D. and W. Henderson, of Partick, he went to sea as a marine engineer and became engineer-in-charge.
Subsequently he spent four years with the National Boiler and General Insurance Company of Manchester, rising to the position of assistant chief engineer.
Mr. Mackay was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1903, and a Member in 1928.
He was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Naval Architects.
