1847 Born in London.

c.1860 Joined A. Ransome and Co (presumably Samuel Worssam and Co for the first years) of Chelsea, spending 5 years in the drawing office and 5 years in the workshops.

1861 Henry James Coles 15, civil engineer, lived in St Marylebone, with Lewis Coles 42, military tailor, Maria Coles 32, Lewis Harcourt Coles 15, tailor's apprentice, Helen Mary Ann Coles 11, Charlotte Alice Coles 9, Fredk S Coles 7, Edward John Coles 2, Walter Joseph Coles 5 months[1]

c.1870 Became erecting supervisor for Messrs Maudslay, Sons and Field on various ships

1873 Assistant manager with Messrs Appleby Brothers of London

1877 Member of Inst Civil Engineers

1878 Joined I Mech E

1878 Henry James Coles set up business making cranes in a workshop in Sumner Street, Southwark, London[2]. He was joined by three of his brothers (presumably Frederick, Walter and Ernest who became engineers)

By 1881 he was a corporate member of the Inst of Civil Engineers[3]
