HENRY AYLWIN BEVAN COLE was born in London in March 1851, and was educated at Worthing College, subsequently becoming a pupil at the Ducal Polytechnic School, Brunswick, during 1867-8.
From there he went to Messrs. Ravenhill, Hodgson and Co., Ratcliff, London, where he passed through the shops, until the middle of 1870.
He then entered into partnership with his brother in shipbuilding at Howdon-on-Tyne, where he remained until 1876, and then was engaged in surveying steamers until 1880.
In the following year he was appointed engineer and shipwright surveyor to Lloyd's Register at Cardiff, which post he held until 1884, when he became consulting and superintending engineer to Henry Bucknall and Sons, shipowners, London. During this latter period of over thirty years he was also engaged in various enterprises and inventions.
Besides having a fluent knowledge of French, German, and Italian, he translated from the German an extensive treatise on Naval Mechanical Engineering.
His death took place at Richmond, Surrey, on 7th September 1922, at the age of seventy-one.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1892.
