1886 May 16th. Born the son of James Robert Alexander, and his wife Margaret D. Wilson.
Served apprenticeship in engineering with Argyll Motors, Alexandria and Arrol-Johnston, Paisley.
1901 Living at 9 Minto Street, Edinburgh: James R. Alexander (age 49 born Edinburgh), Boot, Cycle and Piano Merchant. With his wife Margaret D. Alexander (age 46 born Lerwick, Shetland) and their six children; James R. Alexander (age 25 born Edinburgh), Assistant Manager Merchant; Beatrice Alexander (age 24 born Edinburgh); Alice Alexander (age 19 born Edinburgh); Henry Alexander (age 15 born Edinburgh); Alfred H. Alexander (age 10 born Edinburgh); and Douglas S. Alexander (age 8 born Edinburgh). Four servants.[1]

Alexander (senior), and brother. Alfred Alexander (q.v.). of Alexanders of Edinburgh: climbed Ben Nevis (4,406 ft.) in a Model T Ford in 1911 and in a Model A Ford in 1928; married; one daughter.'[2]
