"HARRY Dain, who was born in 1904, was educated at Leeds University, where he gained the mechanical engineering diploma. His practical training was obtained between 1921 and 1928 with the Standard Motor Construction Co, Jersey City, U.S.A., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company, Ltd., Manchester, and United Automobile Services, Ltd., Darlington, with whom he remained as assistant to the area engineer for a further two years. After acting for a brief period as operating superintendent for the London area of Messrs. Northern Motor Utilities, Ltd., he joined the staff of the Ministry of Transport and was successively engaged as vehicle and senior vehicle examiner. On the outbreak of war in 1939 he volunteered for service as a fitter in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps and was subsequently commissioned as second lieutenant in the Royal Army Service Corps. He was transferred to the R.E.M.E. in 1942 and saw service in India and Burma, being demobilized in 1945 with the rank of captain. Since that date he had been serving on the establishment of the Ministry of Transport as senior vehicle examiner, Northern traffic area, and more recently as regional maintenance and certifying officer for Yorkshire. Mr. Dain, whose death occurred on 16th September 1950, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1944.
