1921 Obituary [1]

HARRY CAWLEY SWINDELLS was born at Marple, Cheshire, on 11th April 1877.

He was educated at Stonyhurst College, and began a four years' apprenticeship in 1895 at the works of Galloway's, Ltd. During this latter period he attended evening classes at the Manchester Technical School, and later at Owens College.

From 1899 to 1902 he served in the Imperial Light Infantry in the South African War. On its termination he entered the service of the Natal Government Railways, as assistant to the signal engineer. On the retrenchment of the staff, in 1905, owing to trade depression, be became engineering representative of a firm dealing in machinery and engineering supplies.

Four years later he rejoined the Natal Government Railways (subsequently the South African Railways) at their request in the same position as before, and remained there until his death, which took place at Johannesburg on 1st January 1921, in his forty-fourth year.

He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1914.
