"HAROLD FREDERICK LAWTON was born in 1893, and received his education at the Leeds Technical College. He served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Fairbairns, Ltd., of Leeds, from 1908 to 1913, in whose employment he continued as a designer of machine tools for another year. He then joined H.M. Forces and saw service in France, rising to the rank of captain. On demobilization in 1919 he returned to Messrs. Fairbairns, and successively held positions as senior and head draughtsman and, finally, that of chief designer.
In this latter capacity he was in control of the design and production of machine tools of all classes. After five years as designing engineer and manager to Messrs. Campbells and Hunter, Ltd., of Leeds, he was appointed works engineer to Messrs. Wilson and Mathieson, Ltd., of the same city, and, subsequently, became works manager. In 1940 he received a similar appointment with the Parkinson Stove Company, Ltd., of Oldham, with whom he remained until 1946, when he became associated with Messrs. Monitor Engineering and Oil Appliances, Ltd., of Birmingham, where his death occurred on 8th September 1949.
Mr. Lawton had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1921."
