1927 The ASDIC Research and Development Unit was established at Portland (where it remained until 1940).

1940 The Anti-Submarine Experimental Establishment was established at Fairlie, where it remained until 1947.

1947 The Underwater Detection Establishment was established at Portland; it was responsible for research into underwater detection and communications.

1960 The unit was absorbed into the Admiralty Underwater Weapons Establishment.
