1834 Born in Hamburg, a nephew of Gustavus Schwabe, a financier, who later became a major investor in John Bibby, Sons and Co

Apprenticed with Joseph Whitworth and Co., of Manchester.
Engineer of a steamer in the Mediterranean,
Through the good offices of his uncle, he became private assistant to Edward James Harland at Hickson's yard.
