GRINDROD KERSHAW, who was born in 1867, retained a connection with the Rochdale district during the whole of his lifetime. He received his education at the Rochdale Technical School and at the Manchester College of Technology. On the completion of a seven years' apprenticeship with Messrs. James Petrie and Company, engineers, of Rochdale, in 1888, he entered the drawing office of Messrs. Thomas Holt, Ltd., manufacturers of textile machinery, and was first engaged upon the development of a section warping machine, of which he was one of the patentees. Subsequently he was retained by the firm as draughtsman until 1905 when he joined the board of directors.
Two years later he was made a director of the Lancashire Paper Tube Company. During his long association with Messrs. Thomas Holt he was responsible for the design and development of the machinery and was the patentee of several inventions. Mr. Kershaw, whose death occurred on 26th November 1942, was for some years head of the mechanical engineering department of the Rochdale Municipal Technical School. He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1899 and was transferred to Membership in 1917.
