"GERALD HENRY ADOLPHUS SINGTON, C.B.E., whose death occurred at Alderley Edge, Cheshire, on 22nd September 1946, was chairman of the Textile Machinery Industrial and Export Group and a director of Messrs. Platt Brothers and Company, Ltd., textile machinists, of Oldham.
He was born at Broughton, Manchester, on 28th December 1876, and educated at St. Paul's School. After serving his apprenticeship from 1894 to 1899 with Messrs. Platt Brothers, he remained in their employment as assistant manager and was engaged on the erection of machinery at the Paris Exhibition. From 1901 to 1907 he was engineer to Messrs. Adolphus Sington and Company, Ltd., consulting engineers and shippers, of Manchester, and during the next seven years was a partner in that firm.
He then served throughout the 1914-18 war in the Royal Engineers and was mentioned in dispatches. On his demobilization with the rank of major he resumed his partnership with Messrs. Sington and Company, and later was made a senior partner. He relinquished this position in 1931 and entered upon his appointment as a director of Messrs. Platt Brothers, and also joined the Board of Messrs. Taylor Wadsworth, Ltd., of Leeds. He was awarded the C.B.E. in 1945. Mr. Sington, who was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1917 and transferred to Membership in 1932, was the author of a number of books on cotton spinning machinery."
