1825 Formed partnership with James Simpson as Simpson and Thompson, engine makers and vendors[1].

1836 The partnership of Simpson and Thompson was dissolved by mutual consent[2].

His son, Alfred, was in his service until 1842, when he was admitted as partner in the firm of G. Thompson and Sons.

1844 Alfred took over as managing partner which he continued until his death in 1864.
