1904 'SHEFFIELD POLICE COURTS. The Smoke Nuisance. George Senior and Sons (Limited), of Ponds Forge, were summoned yesterday in the Stipendiary's Court for not abating a nuisance arising from a chimney at their works. Mr. H. Craven, from the Town Clerk's Department, stated that a notice had been served on the defendants to abate the nuisance, but subsequent observations revealed no improvement. Defendants had three Lancashire boilers, and the time allowed for emission was four minutes hour. According the evidence of the inspectors the emissions had ranged as high as 28 minutes the hour, though not continuous. It was further alleged that the nuisance could be obviated with more care in firing. Mr. Albert Senior, of the defendant firm, stated that in 1895 they were summoned to abate smoke, and put up a new chimney, besides adding to the boilers the latest smoke-consuming apparatus known. From then until the end last year he was not aware of any complaint. Towards the end the year, however, some of the appliances got out of repair, and it was thought necessary to renew them. Defendants had been making experiments, and at Christmas put in what was said to be one of the best smoke consumers on the market, but unfortunately this had not come up to expectation. It was impossible before a general stoppage to put another apparatus in. Mr. Senior added that many of the observations were made on wet, or foggy, days when the slight smoke emitted would give the inspectors a worse impression. He promised that defendants would do everything they could to abate the nuisance. The Stipendiary made the customary order to abate.'[1]
1938 'Sheffield Steelmaker's Estate. Mr. G. E. Senior, of Ellerslie, Dore. near Sheffield, former Joint managing-director of George Senior and Sons. Ltd.. steelmakers and forgers, of Ponds Forge. Sheffield, son of the late Alderman George Senior, former Lord Mayor of Sheffield, left £99,362 (net personalty. £98,035), on which estate duty of £18,694 has been paid. Tesatator left £l00 each to his chauffeur, F. Young, and housekeeper, Eliza Birks, if respectively still serving. [2]
